Dr. Scott Heithoff Offering Innovative, Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement

For select candidates, local orthopedic surgeon Dr. Scott Heithoff, of Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron, now offers an advanced technique in the treatment of chronic hip pain — anterior hip replacement. Compared to traditional hip replacement, the anterior approach offers a less invasive, muscle-sparing procedure with less pain and faster recovery times. Patients seeking innovative, specialized care for chronic joint pain are encouraged to call (810) 985-4900 to schedule a safe appointment at the practice’s office, located at 940 River Centre Drive.

“Hip replacement surgery is a very successful procedure for degenerative conditions of the hip joint with a long track record of excellent outcomes,” says Dr. Heithoff, a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedist specializing in joint replacement. “At Orthopedic Associates, we are dedicated to continuing to provide the most advanced treatment options to our community, and as part of that dedication, I sought additional training in order to offer anterior hip replacement surgery.”

Like traditional approached to hip replacement surgery, anterior hip replacement is used to treat degenerative hip conditions by replacing the damaged portions of the hip joint with a prosthetic joint, reducing overall hip pain and restoring function and mobility. In addition to the relief seen with traditional approaches, the anterior approach to total hip replacement has been able to provide patients with the following benefits:
—    Better range of motion.
—    Fewer postoperative hip precautions during the recovery period.
—    Less muscle trauma.
—    Less postoperative pain.
—    Lower risk of dislocation.
—    Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.

“Anterior hip replacement allows a surgeon to reach the hip from the front of the hip as opposed to the side or back of the hip. The biggest benefit of the anterior approach to hip replacement is that it is less invasive for the patient than more traditional approaches,” Dr. Heithoff says. “Through this innovative approach, surgeons are able to replace the damaged hip joint from a vantage point that spares more muscle and healthy soft tissue, which helps patients return to normal activities sooner.”

Dr. Heithoff received his medical degree from Des Moines University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. He completed an internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Garden City Hospital in Garden City, Michigan, then received advanced fellowship training in adult reconstructive surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. He is the chief of the department of orthopedics at Port Huron Hospital.
