Orthopedic Associates is making an ImPACT on area athletes

Local orthopedic experts provide concussion program to area high schools

PORT HURON, Mich. (October 2011) – High school athletes will be safer this season due to a new concussion program provided by the sports medicine specialists at Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron. Port Huron and Port Huron Northern High Schools received the concussion program earlier in the football season as a way to help the schools further protect high school athletes from concussions.

Using computerized neurocognitive assessment tools, the ImPACT concussion program helps high school athletic departments and area medical experts assess an athlete’s injury and better determines their ability to return to play following a concussion.

Dr. Todd Murphy, fellowship-trained sports medicine expert, shares, "ImPACT is a tool utilized by many professional sports, including the NFL and NHL, which aids the medical professional in identifying those athletes at risk and helps to ensure the safety of those athletes when they return to play. While most athletes who sustain a concussion will be able to safely return to play after a short period of time, some athletes may have subtle symptoms which may put them at significant risk to return to sports."

Currently, Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron purchased ImPACT for use at Port Huron and Port Huron Northern High Schools, both of which the practice is official medical providers for.  The sports medicine specialists at Orthopedic Associates, Drs. Gary Doss, Todd Murphy and Raj Makim, will assist the high school athletic departments in working with the ImPACT program’s tools and services. For questions about concussions or the ImPACT program, please contact Orthopedic Associates of Port Huron at (810) 985-4900.
